Benchmarking Tools: the future of freely accessible data

So January is over already. Did your new year’s resolution last more than a few days? If it didn’t please read this post and maybe make amends on NHS Change Day.

Recently the RCPCH released the results of its consultation on the structure and governance of the college. This may have passed you by during a daily e-mail onslaught but the results are well worth reading. The mandate to move towards a multi-professional Foundation has been granted. This will be debated at the AGM in Birmingham if approved by council so please do attend if you get the chance!

The final settlement of an incident at Great Ormond Street reminds us of how the risks to patient safety are ever-present. The Health Foundation have recently released a presentation by Prof Mary Dixon-Woods on determining the safety of care. This is well worth watching and contains some surprising data.

Public Health England have created a benchmarking tool based on ChiMat data which “presents a selection of indicators that are most relevant to the health and wellbeing of children and young people in an easily accessible way to support local decision making.” It is likely data in this format will become increasing available and will encompass public health, social care and clinical outcomes in the future. Given the low rates of mortality in paediatric practice it will be important indicators are well thought out when describing secondary care. The Childrens and Young People’s Outcome Forum have started creating some indicators but it will be worth everyone thinking about what they think best defines the quality of the unit/organisation they work in.
